The use of light and the unlicensed optical frequency spectrum represents an interesting alternative to conventional radio technologies and enables interference-free communication in the aircraft. In the AIRBORNE-DE-LIGHT project, the LEDs used in the cabin lighting are to be used simultaneously for the high-bitrate, wireless communication required for the distribution of content from the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. The adaptation to the existing infrastructure in the aircraft cabin, high-energy efficiency and compatibility with the existing interfaces in the cabin or at the IFE-system represent hereby a particular challenge.
