Interoperable secure quantum key management system
The goal of the project "QuNET+ISQKMS" is the development of a quantum key management system (KMS) that meets highest security requirements.
Funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
Duration: October 2022 – September 2025
Quantum key distribution (QKD) systems usually distribute secure cryptographic keys only over point-to-point links. In order to extend the application of QKD to highly meshed wide-area quantum communication networks with a large number of interconnected nodes and users, a trusted and network-wide key management system (KMS) is required. Such a KMS receives highly secure keys from attached QKD systems, manages these QKD-keys throughout their lifecycle, and upon user requests it then provides the keys to key-consumer applications such as network encryptors. In future quantum communication networks, secure and interoperable key management systems as developed within this project will play a central and essential role. Fraunhofer HHI contributes to the development of key management systems for quantum communication networks, in particular with respect to QKD protocols based on discrete quantum states. The research team at HHI implements suitable interfaces between the key management system and the in-house QKD system developed at HHI. The resulting system will then be used for demonstrating QKD technology in various application scenarios and experiments.
