Industrializable key technologies for energy-efficient Tbit transceivers in 6G mobile radio systems
Research into system concepts and experimental investigations for broadband, high-bit-rate sub-THz MIMO transmission with consideration of economic efficiency and environmental compatibility
Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
Duration: November 2022 - April 2026
ESSENCE-6GM aims to research solutions for the economic realization of energy-efficient and high-performance 6G mobile radio transceivers for the sub-THz frequency range. The main criteria for the technical objective is always economic efficiency and environmental compatibility, i.e. the suitability of the developed solutions for a cost-effective realization under conditions of industrial series production as well as a significant increase in energy efficiency in operation compared to the current state of the solutions. The project addresses critical bottlenecks in current systems by introducing completely new concepts for analog/digital conversion, RF circuit technology and RF module integration. As part of the project, different switching and integration concepts are being investigated with regard to energy and spectral efficiency, performance and cost-effective feasibility. The aim is to realize the demonstration of a MIMO Beamforming Transceiver (TRX) system capable of transmitting 1Tbit/s over several 10m by the end of the project. To this end, ESSENCE-6GM brings together the most important players from Germany in the fields of semiconductor technology, microelectronics, RF circuit technology and packaging technology as well as telecommunications infrastructure with world-leading technologies and know-how in their fields in order to address the final issues for the commercial realization of sub-THz mobile radio transceivers. This supports the early strategic positioning of German companies and research in the commercial introduction of 6G sub-THz mobile communications.
