Volumetric Video Production

Volumetric video becomes the new standard for future eXtended Reality (XR) applications. Since more than 15 years, Fraunhofer HHI is researching on multi-view 3D video reconstruction. Due to the advancements in XR, volumetric video became one of our major research topics in the last 5 years. Below, sample material is presented from the most relevant proof-of-concept productions.

Eva Umlauf - her testimony

In May 2021, we had the opportunity to record Dr. Eva Umlauf in the volumetric capture studio at Volucap. It is a collaboration with Prof. Anja Ballis and Prof. Markus Gloe from Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. Eva Umlauf is one of the youngest children that survived the concentration camp in Auschwitz. We conceptualized six different episodes based on her biography. Each episode lasted between 8-10 minutes. Overall, almost 60 minutes of content were captured, leading to a total amount of 80 TeraBytes of raw video data. The concept and outlook of the virtual scene, where Eva Umlauf will be placed in, is part of the recently started project VoViREx.

Ernst Grube - the legacy

In autumn 2019, the first volumetric video production in the area of cultural heritage was performed. Together with UFA, we captured the survivor of the holocaust Ernst Grube and a young student, while they are talking about his experience in Nazi Germany and his imprisonment in the concentration camp Theresienstadt. Five episodes of his life, each lasting about 8-10 min. have been recorded. Since March 2022, the complete VR experience "Ernst Grube - the Legacy" is finalised.

In the eyes of a stranger feat. Hanna Juergens

In autumn 2019, a test production was performed at the new studio of Volucap GmbH. The actrice Hanna Juergens performed during this test a short act entitled "In the eyes of a stranger". First results are presented at Virtual IBC 2020.

Uli Wegner - the boxing trainer legend

In spring 2018, the boxing trainer legend Uli Wegner has been volumetrically captured. It was a collaboration with Inflections GmbH. The resulting volumetric asset is integrated in a VR experience showcased in an exhibition in the city museum in Gera, Germany, from May 2018 - April 2019.

An Entire Life

In October 2017, the first proof-of-concept production was performed in our new 360 degree volumetric capture studio entitled by "An entire life". It was a collaboration with UFA GmbH and the VR experience produced shows a journey through the history of movie production due to the 100th anniversary of UFA. The VR experience is part of the exhibition in the Film Museum Berlin.

Tiger Tale

In April 2017, a proof-of-concept production was performed with a limited capture set-up for full body acquisition reaching a 200 degrees field of view. It was a collaboration with Trotzkind GmbH and the VR experience has been showcased at Int. Broadcasting Convention IBC 2017 for the first time.
