Dr.-Ing. Christian Schmidt, scientist at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, was awarded the Dr. Wilhelmy Foundation's dissertation award by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). The award was presented during the faculty's annual graduation ceremony. It recognizes his summa cum laude dissertation "Inter-leaving Concepts for Performance Enhancement of High-Speed Digital-to-Analog Converters".
In his dissertation, Dr.-Ing. Christian Schmidt investigated new methods to increase the data rate in optical fiber networks. To achieve this, he used two innovative methods with combined digital-to-analog converters (DAC) to create a transmitter with a higher data rate. The two methods are known as analog multiplexing and frequency interleaving. Both methods can multiply the bandwidth of the signal. The dissertation was published by Springer Vieweg with the title "Interleaving Concepts for Digital-to-Analog Converters". Christian Schmidt has been researching the broadband signal generation for optical communication technology at Fraunhofer HHI in the department Photonic Networks and Systems since 2015. Recently, he has also been working on real-time signal processing for wireless communication with light (LiFi).
Dr. Wilhelmy Foundation
Established in 2007, the foundation's purpose is to promote science and research, teaching and education as well as art and culture, monument conservation and preservation. It achieves its purpose in particular by awarding the annual "Klung-Wilhelmy Wissenschafts-Preises" to young German scientists in the fields of physics or chemistry and by transferring funds to other bodies.
