Biography
Jangwoo Son has been working in the Multimedia Communications Group at Fraunhofer HHI (Heinrich Hertz Institute) in Berlin, Germany since 2018. He received his B.S. degree as valedictorian and M.S. degree in Computer Engineering from Gachon University in Feb. 2017 and Aug. 2018, respectively.
He contributed to Motion Constrained Tile Sets (MCTS) into MPEG HM reference software and the development of a VR Javascript player conforming to MPEG Omnidirectional Media Format (OMAF).
His research interests are an interactive volumetric video cloud-based streaming system, congestion control for immersive application over 5G, and contribution to real-time communication in 3GPP SA4.
Main Research Topics
5GXR

We explore ways to efficiently stream volumetric videos over 5G networks. Our work focuses on development of a volumetric video streaming system that offloads the rendering to a powerful cloud/edge server and only sends the rendered 2D view to the client instead of the full volumetric content.
360° Video - MPEG-OMAF

The MPEG-OMAF standard (officially ISO/IEC 23090-2) is the first international standard for storage and distribution of 360° Video, with significant contributions from Fraunhofer HHI’s Video Coding and Analytics department. OMAF specifies tile-based streaming of 360° Video which allows for significantly higher resolution at the end device.
