Gain of Grain for VVC

Open, Optimized VVC Encoder Implementation VVenC: now with Film Grain technology

Film grain is a characteristic visual feature valued by filmmakers and cinephiles for its artistic aesthetic. However, the faithful preservation of film grain during encoding poses a challenge for traditional compression techniques. The random noise of film grain results in an enormous bit rate.

At NAB 2024, Fraunhofer HHI proudly presents how video with film grain can indeed be efficiently compressed with VVenC, Fraunhofer HHI's open and optimized encoder implementation of the most recent Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Standard. The presented framework based in VVenC employs a coding strategy that balance the preservation of film grain with a more efficient compression.
