For next generation cellular networks we will include certain key performance indicators such as cell and user capacity, coverage, energy efficiency, quality of service/experience as well as security of wireless communications. In order to meet the increasing demands, networks will become more and more heterogeneous in sense of deployment strategies such as macros, picos, relays and femtos. In contrast to these single-RAT deployments, multi-RAT will gain in importance. Hence, interference and cell area capacities will become heterogeneous as well.
In such systems we will have to reconsider strategies for interference coordination, coordinated multi-point transmission and reception and load-balancing between different RATs.
