Welcome to the EU project METIS which stands for Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society. The main objective of the project is lay the foundation of the next generation mobile and wireless communications system.
METIS, Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for Twenty-twenty (2020) Information Society. METIS is co-funded by the European Commission as an Integrated Project under the Seventh Framework Programme for research and development (FP7). The project will provide an important platform for a European-led early global consensus on fundamental questions connected to the development of the future mobile and wireless communications system, and pave the way for future standardisation.
The project objective is to lay the foundation for a future mobile and wireless communications system for 2020 and beyond. METIS is a consortium of 29 partners coordinated by Ericsson. Approximately 80 persons will be dedicated full time to METIS during its 30-month duration. The strong consortium includes manufacturers, network telecommunications operators, academic institutions, automotive industry and a research centre.
Project Rationale
Societal development will lead to changes in the way mobile and wireless communication systems are used. Essential services such as e-banking, e-learning and e-health will continue to proliferate and become more mobile. On-demand information and entertainment will be delivered over mobile and wireless communication systems. The wirelessly connected Internet of Things will make our everyday life more efficient, comfortable and safer. The applications include areas as automotive and public transportation, public safety and emergency services, transport and logistics, medical solutions and industrial systems. Mobile and wireless communication systems beyond 2020 will have to respond to the increase in traffic volume, by increasing capacity and by improving efficiency in energy, cost and spectrum utilisation. Further, the numbers of devices and varieties of use cases and requirements will necessitate mobile and wireless communication solutions with significantly increased versatility and improved scalability. Societal challenges concerning sustainability, socio-economic development and economic growth must also be addressed.
Project Objectives
The main objective of METIS is to lay the foundation for, and to generate a European consensus on the future global mobile and wireless communications system. METIS will provide valuable and timely contributions to pre-standardisation and regulation processes, and ensure European leadership in mobile and wireless communications.
The overall technical objective of the METIS project is to develop a concept for the future mobile and wireless communications system that supports the connected information society by combining the results of the following technical objectives.
METIS will provide fundamentally new solutions which fit the needs beyond 2020. Research will be conducted on network topologies, radio links, multi-node, and spectrum usage techniques. Horizontal topics will be used to integrate the research results into a system concept that provides the necessary flexibility, versatility and scalability at a low cost.
