Mobile World Congress 2023
FEB 2023
27 Feb - 2 Mar
Barcelona, Spain
Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) is a world leader in the development of mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as processing and coding of video signals. Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from basic research to the development of prototypes and solutions.
At Mobile World Congress 2023, Fraunhofer HHI presents the latest developments in Wireless Communications and Networks, Photonic Networks and Systems as well as Video Communication and Applications at the Fraunhofer booth 7G31, hall 7, on February 27 - March 2 in Barcelona, Spain.
Mixed Reality Video Streaming with L4S
Volumetric Video (VV) reproduces objects in a photorealistic manner and has gained increasing popularity in recent years. The emerging technology for the photo-realistic representation on mobile devices is cloud-based streaming that offloads the complex rendering operation to an edge server and allows streaming of high-quality, interactive Mixed Reality (MR) applications to mobile devices.
At MWC 2023, Fraunhofer HHI demonstrates interactive high-quality volumetric video streaming for cloud-based mixed reality over 5G. We present novel techniques for interactive animation with volumetric assets and network congestion control in real-time through Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable throughput (L4S) standard to provide stable and low latency for the best user experience. The presented interactive XR experience showcases photo-realistic volumetric representation of human. As the user moves in the scene, the virtual human follows the user with his head, conveying the impression of a true interaction.
THz Wireless Communication for 6G
THz communications is widely regarded as one of the key technologies for future 6G networks, supporting a massive increase in the wireless data rate requirements. At MWC 2023, Fraunhofer HHI and Fraunhofer IAF showcase a radio-head prototype for broadband point-to-point wireless data transmission at sub-THz carrier frequencies (300 GHz). The prototype is designed for data rates up to 100 Gb/s over transmission distances of up to 1 km.
LiFi from the Socket
Fraunhofer HHI, together with devolo, the market leader for Powerline Communication (PLC), presents a LiFi-PLC system for the first time. PLC uses the power lines for data transmission and thus enables the networking of entire houses by reusing the existing infrastructure. With the combination of PLC and LiFi, every power outlet and lamp socket becomes a secure hotspot for mobile data transmission with light at high speeds.
