Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from fundamental research to the development of prototypes and solutions.

At IBC 2024, Fraunhofer HHI presents the latest developments in Video Communication and Applications and Vision and Imaging Technologies at booth B80 in Halle 8 from September 13 to 16, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Gain of Grain for VVC

Efficient Encoding and Decoding with Film Grain Synthesis

Film grain is a characteristic visual feature valued by filmmakers and cinephiles for its artistic aesthetic. However, the faithful preservation of film grain during encoding poses a challenge for traditional compression techniques. The random noise of film grain results in an enormous bit rate.

At IBC 2024, Fraunhofer HHI proudly presents how video with film grain can indeed be efficiently compressed with VVenC, Fraunhofer HHIs open and optimized encoder implementation of the most recent Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Standard. The presented framework based in VVenC employs a coding strategy that balances the preservation of film grain with a more efficient compression. Additionally, Fraunhofer HHIs VVC decoder, VVdeC, now supports UHD decoding with Film Grain Synthesis, providing versatile playback opportunities.
