NAB Show 2023
APR 2023
15 - 19
Las Vegas, USA
The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI is a world leader in the development for mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as processing and coding of video signals. Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from fundamental research to the development of prototypes and solutions.
At NAB Show taking place from April 15-19, 2023 in Las Vegas (USA), Fraunhofer HHI will present latest developments in video technologies and applications. You can find us at Fraunhofer booth C3529.
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) with Optimized Implementations
At NAB 2023, Fraunhofer HHI will showcase the latest versions of its optimized VVC open-source software implementations and their integration with third-party applications. Compared to the state-of-the-art High Efficiency Video Coding standard (HEVC/H.265), Versatile Video Coding (VVC / H.266) offers a 50 percent bit rate reduction for a wide range of applications.
The implementations include the fastest highly efficient open-source VVC encoder (VVenC) as well as the fastest standards-compliant open-source VVC decoder (VVdeC). Using VVenC, Fraunhofer HHI demonstrates a significant reduction in bit rates of VVC compared to HEVC for a range of practical applications. These include the integration of VVenC into a platform for cloud-based adaptive streaming with different image resolutions as well as the efficient compression of 8K high dynamic range (HDR) video by VVenC. Fraunhofer HHI will also present how VVdeC enables playback of VVC-encoded video on desktop and mobile devices as well as in a web browser.
