January 25, 2019
From 22 to 25 January 2019, the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology Lausanne (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne; EPFL), with support from the Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations, hosted the third workshop and meeting of the ITU/WHO Focus Group on “AI for Health” (FG-AI4H) at the Swiss Tech Convention Center (Ecublens, Switzerland). The Focus Group is developing a framework for the standardized evaluation of AI technology for health. The event drew participants from the global medical and machine learning communities, and was highly productive.
To concentrate expertise from shared themes, ten overarching “topic groups” were established. These focus on AI applications for:
- Cardiovascular disease risk prediction
- Dermatology
- Falls among the elderly
- Histopathology
- Neuro-cognitive diseases
- Ophthalmology (retinal imaging diagnostics)
- Psychiatry
- Snakebite and snake identification
- Symptom checkers
- Tuberculosis
The Focus Group will be issuing calls for participation in these topic groups. Additionally, the Focus Group reviewed data acceptance/handling protocols and the call for a benchmarking software package to be run on United Nations storage and data processing infrastructure.
