From 29 May to 1 June 2019, in conjunction with the “AI for Global Good Summit” in Geneva, Switzerland, the ITU/WHO Focus Group on “AI for Health” (FG-AI4H) held their fifth workshop and meeting.
FG-AI4H is developing a framework for the standardized benchmarking of AI technology for health. The event attracted participants from the medical, Machine Learning/AI, and regulatory communities. The workshop opened with keynote presentations from Thomas Wiegand, Chair of the Focus Group; Chaesub Lee, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau; Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of the WHO; and Bernardo Mariano, CIO of the WHO.
Highlights of the meeting included a report of the first proof-of-concept benchmarking run for topic “Histopathology.” In addition, updates on the progress for other topics were provided and several new topics were proposed and accepted (e.g., Topic Group Outbreaks).
The next FG-AI4H workshops and meetings will occur in Zanzibar, Tanzania (2-5 September 2019); New Delhi, India (November 2019); and Brasilia, Brazil (January 2020).
